Newsies Jr. at Stadium High School | A Powerful, Moving Spring Musical

Last weekend, Stadium High School’s theater program in Tacoma brought something truly special to the stage with their spring production of Newsies Jr. — and it was nothing short of incredible.

From the very first number to the final bow, the performance was filled with energy, emotion, and an undeniable sense of purpose. This year marked a record number of student participants, both on stage and behind the scenes — a testament to the strength and passion of Stadium’s performing arts community.

A Production Led with Vision

Under the direction of Liz Jacobsen, the show came to life in a way that felt both polished and deeply heartfelt. Liz’s leadership continues to elevate the program year after year, and this production was no exception.

To support the students at an even higher level, specialized choreographers and vocal coaches were brought in — and it showed.

The choreography was dynamic and powerful, the vocals were strong and emotional, and the overall performance felt cohesive, confident, and incredibly well-prepared.

A Story That Still Resonates Today

Newsies Jr. tells the story of a group of young newspaper sellers in New York City who, facing unfair treatment and rising costs from powerful publishers, band together to fight for what’s right.

Led by the charismatic Jack Kelly, the newsies organize a strike, standing up against injustice and proving that even those with the smallest voices can create meaningful change when they come together.

It’s a story of:

  • Courage

  • Resilience

  • Friendship

  • Standing up for what matters

And as many audience members shared after the show, it’s a story that still resonates deeply today.

A Performance That Moved the Audience

One of the most powerful takeaways from this production was its emotional impact.

Guests shared that they were moved to tears, reflecting on the real-life history of street children and the strength it took for them to stand up and create change.

There was a collective feeling in the room — that this was more than just a school performance. It was storytelling with heart, intention, and meaning.

Behind the Scenes: The Heart of the Production

With a record number of students involved, this production was also a celebration of the behind-the-scenes team — the students who worked on:

  • Live Music Score

  • Set design

  • Costumes

  • Lighting

  • Sound

  • Stage management

These elements came together seamlessly to support the performers and bring the world of Newsies to life.

It’s a reminder that theater is truly a collaborative art, and every role matters.

Capturing Moments That Matter

Photographing Newsies Jr. at Stadium High School was an honor — capturing not just the performance itself, but the expressions, movement, and emotion that made the show unforgettable.

Performing arts deserve to be documented with the same level of care and professionalism as any major production. High-quality photography and video allow schools, students, and families to preserve these moments and share them for years to come.
