Dia de los Muertos Ball – Tacoma–Cienfuegos Sister City Fundraiser | Event Photography & Video by Sage + Soul

This weekend I had the honor of photographing and filming the “Amor Eterno” Dia de los Muertos Ball, hosted by the Tacoma – Cienfuegos Sister City Committee.

It was a breathtaking night of culture, color, and community — all in support of Tacoma’s sister city - Cienfuegos, Cuba.

About the Committee

The Tacoma – Cienfuegos Sister City Committee, which was founded and chaired by Marisela Fleites Lear, builds bridges of friendship and collaboration between Tacoma, WA and Cienfuegos, Cuba. Their projects have included humanitarian aid, cultural exchange, and supporting schools for children with disabilities in Cienfuegos.

The Amor Eterno Ball raised funds to continue that mission. The event was:

• Organized by Frances Lorenz (Event Chair & Treasurer)

• Promoted by Carlos Ortiz with Zeta-Maya Entertainment (Board Member)

A Night of Art, Music & Magic

Guests arrived dressed on-theme in elegant, Dia de los Muertos-inspired fashion — colorful masks, florals, and detailed attire that made every photo stunning.

Highlights of the evening included:

• Silent Auction featuring hand-crafted alebrijes made by local artists exclusively for this event. Brought to you by both Odessa Christiana of Tacoma Loyal and Frances Lopez. More information on the Alebrijes Project here.

• Flamenco dance demo by Marisela Fleites Lear, the committee founder herself.

• Salsa dance demo by Takechi Ruiz that had everyone moving.

• Live music by the Anjali Silva Trio, Flor De Luna, and Sin Embargo.

• Dinner catered by Tepora Salanoa, serving authentic Cuban flavors.

• Hosted by Mario Lopez, who kept the program flowing with energy and heart.

Every detail — from the decor to the dance floor — was a celebration of Tacoma’s cultural spirit and global connection.

How I Captured the Event

My goal was to tell the story of this fundraiser in a way that keeps it alive long after the last song played.

Before guests arrived, I photographed the decor, table settings, and auction items. Once the evening began, I focused on candid moments — guests laughing, dancing, bidding, and connecting. The performances were captured from multiple angles to show both the artists and the audience energy.

For video, I filmed short clips for a social-media highlight reel and a 2-minute recap video the committee can use for donor thank-yous, press, and promotion of next year’s ball.
